British Horse Society Welfare Advice Helpline
Who do YOU turn to when you need some help and support?
Horses can be tricky customers sometimes – they are masters at making fools of all of us and throwing up all kinds of problems and difficult questions. For many people it can be hard to know where to turn for advice – even for those with a brilliant support network already in place. You might feel foolish asking quite basic questions or you might not want to keep asking your instructor or yard owner. Perhaps you need advice on something confidential or contentious.
Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced horse owner, sometimes you might just need some impartial advice about a horse. The BHS Welfare Department operate a welfare advice telephone helpline during office hours (Monday to Thursday, 8.35am until 5pm; Friday 8.35am until 3pm). Why not give us a call on 01926 707791 or 01926 707804?
At other times, or if it is more convenient for you, the office can be contacted via email at welfare@bhs.org.uk.
We offer advice on anything to do with horses – it doesn’t need to be something obviously welfare related. The range of topics we deal with is enormous including stable management, horse health, nutrition, behaviour, pasture management, buying and loaning horses and breeding. This list is not exhaustive by any means and we will do our best to help with all enquiries we get. Don’t forget that BHS Gold Members also have access to our free legal helpline and the number can be found on the back of your membership card.
We can’t pretend to know the answers to everything but if we can’t help you, we can normally point you in the direction of somebody who can. You may also find some useful information in our welfare publications.
If you are concerned for the welfare of a horse or pony, please see ‘How to report a welfare concern’ for further information.
