Safety

The Safety Department works to improve the safety of all equines and equestrians, especially when they are on the road. We also work with others to increase the effectiveness of safety equipment and clothing, and to promote a safe environment for riders, carriage drivers and their horses. Everything from horse and rider equipment, through to the road surface they ride on and the environment they ride in, including driver licensing laws and related horsebox and trailer issues.

We provide advice to the public on many safety concerns through the issue of free advice leaflets.

In November 2010, www.horseaccidents.org.uk a new equestrian incident/accident reporting website was launched.  The aim of this website is to provide a user friendly and accessible medium through which equestrian incidents can be reported. This will enable the Society to gather meaningful hard facts and statistics to support concerns and provide quantifiable evidence to those in authority to bring about improvements in equestrian safety. If you have experienced any issues which have compromised the safety of both you and your horse, we want to know about it. Visit www.horseaccidents.org.uk and complete the appropriate form, or send us an email with the information if a form does not exist for the problem you have.

We work closely with many Government Departments including the Ministry of Defence and the Department for Transport and Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Transport Safety (PACTS); manufacturers of equestrian clothing and equipment; Public Agencies such as DVLA, Driving Standards Agency, Highways Agency, Police, Fire Service, Air Ambulance, AIRSO, IRSO, ADEPT (formerly known as County Surveyors Society), and many other organisations; Blue Cross, RSPCA, Redwings, Roadsafe (Prince Michael of Kent Road Safety), Thames Valley Road Safe, Police Superintendents Association, Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) and South Essex Insurance Brokers and many others.
